Man dies in hospital after being ambushed in Sydney street in daylight attack

A man has died in hospital after he was allegedly ambushed by three men wearing face coverings in the middle of a street in Sydney's west at lunchtime yesterday.

The victim, a 37-year-old man, was walking on Bangor Street in Guildford about 1.45pm yesterday with another man when they were attacked by three males wearing black clothing and face coverings, according to police.

Superintendent Andrew Holland said the pair had parked their car in Cardigan Street after eating a pizza and were walking on Bangor Street on their way to a property.

As they passed what was believed to be a blue or silver sedan, the three males allegedly jumped out of the car and began attacking the pair.

The second man was allegedly able to escape after distracting one of the males, while the victim was severely assaulted and allegedly suffered "severe" stab wounds to his abdomen.

A short time later when the attackers had fled, the man who escaped got his car, retrieved the victim from the footpath, and took him to Westmead Hospital just after 2.15pm.

He underwent surgery but died at 5:36pm.

Police are searching for a "bladed weapon" and the attackers and are trying to work out why the pair were attacked.

Holland said neither the victim nor the other man had any links to organised crime networks or outlaw motorcycle gangs.

"The victim is known to police but not for any serious matters," he said.

"There are concerns about why they have been attacked in the middle of the day in the middle of the street."

Holland said there were other witnesses in the street at that time who police would like to speak to, with officers doorknocking the entire area.

"We'd like to speak to anyone who was in the area at that time," he said.

Police are urging anyone who may have information, dashcam footage from the area, or who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
