I’m Also A Victim Of Kidnapping, I Paid Millions As Ransom For My Sons Last Year – Suspected Fulani Warlord, Wakili

I’m Also A Victim Of Kidnapping, I Paid Millions As Ransom For My Sons Last Year – Suspected Fulani Warlord, Wakili

The Fulani leader, Iskilu Wakili, who was arrested by members of the Oodua People’s Congress and other security outfits in Kajola, Ibarapa area of Oyo State on Sunday, has denied having any links with kidnapping and other criminal activities in the area.

He described himself as a victim of kidnapping too, saying he had to pay millions of naira as ransom to kidnappers who abducted his sons sometime last year.

Ibarapa residents had accused Wakili of having links with kidnappers in the area. He has also been consistently accused of being a leader of armed Fulani herders who attack farmers and destroy their farmland in the Ibarapa axis.

However, speaking at the state Criminal Investigation Department, Ibadan on Monday, Wakili claimed he had been ill for some time and that it made him faint several times after his arrest.

He said he had just returned from a hospital in Cotonou, Benin Republic and was taking a nap when OPC members invaded his home.

Wakili alleged that the OPC members set his house on fire and killed a woman in the process.

He said: “Sometime last year, two of my children were kidnapped and I paid millions of naira as ransom before they were released. I am not a kidnapper.

“Two days after my return from the hospital (in Cotonou, Republic of Benin), I was lying down because I was ill and suddenly some women came and started shouting that armed OPC men had come looking for me.

“I asked them to flee but I could not run because I was sick. Two men later came and picked me from where I was lying down, they threw me in their vehicle naked. I fainted many times before they drove me to the police station in Igbo-Ora. From there, we were taken to State CID, Ibadan.

“I am not a criminal; my children are not criminals. I don’t know anything about kidnapping or any crime. I have many cows and I know they stray into farms at times but I don’t have criminal records anywhere and this can be investigated. After they took me away from my home, a woman, Tande, was killed.”

Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, who also confirmed Wakili’s trip to the Republic of Benin, said Wakili was taken to hospital after he was handed over to them by OPC members.

She said: “I keep telling you to stop giving ethnic colouration to crime. The question is this, was there any crime committed? It is not a question of whether they were Yoruba and Ibo.

“They had been trying to arrest Wakili. They said they arrested Wakili and two others. But the issue is that as the OPC people left, they set the camp on fire and shot a woman in the stomach. Her intestines gushed out and the woman died. That was basically what happened on Sunday.

“My appeal is that we should all come together to fight crime. Give us credible information. Anybody who has a complaint against Wakili, this is the best time to lodge complaints so that he can be investigated. Wakili is in the custody.”

Nigerians Mock Buhari, Osinbajo For Taking AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine Which Austria Suspended After Death Of Woman

Nigerians Mock Buhari, Osinbajo For Taking AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine Which Austria Suspended After Death Of Woman

Nigerians on Twitter have mocked President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for taking AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine which Austria suspended on Sunday following the death of a woman.

The two leaders were inoculated against the virus publicly by their respective personal physicians on Saturday in a bid to convince Nigerians to take the vaccine.

However, barely 24 hours after Nigeria’s leaders got the jabs, Austria which adopted the same batch of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, suspended it after one died and another developed illness after taking the shots.

“While a 49-year-old woman died as a result of severe coagulation disorders, another 35-year-old woman developed a pulmonary embolism and is recovering,” a report said.

“A pulmonary embolism is an acute lung disease caused by a dislodged blood clot.

“The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) has received two reports in a temporal connection with vaccination from the same batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the district clinic of Zwettl” in Lower Austria province, it said.

“Currently there is no evidence of a causal relationship with the vaccination,” BASG said.

Austrian newspaper Niederoesterreichische Nachrichten as well as broadcaster ORF and the APA news agency reported that the women were both nurses who worked at the Zwettl clinic.

BASG said blood clotting was not among the known side effects of the vaccine. It was pursuing its investigation vigorously to completely rule out any possible link.

“As a precautionary measure, the remaining stocks of the affected vaccine batch are no longer being issued or vaccinated,” it added.

An AstraZeneca spokesman said: “There have been no confirmed serious adverse events associated with the vaccine,” adding that all batches are subject to strict and rigorous quality controls."

Reacting, a human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju @adeyanjudeji, said on his Twitter handle, “This is the vaccine Buhari is deceiving some Nigerians he took? If you allow him to scam you again, that’s your problem. Even South Africa has suspended it.”

Good name is better than gold, @sirpeeworld tweeted, “Buhari and his VP took chloroquine not vaccine. All world leaders are taking different liquid or an empty string to deceive their citizens.”

“Nobody can convince me Buhari took that vaccine,” Eric Ebruphiyor @Ericfamiliar1 reacted.

“Simple,” Trace Scorch @iTs_TSc said. “All those that were promoting and advertising the poison for others to take, will have blood on their hands for trafficking drugs or for promoting others to take harmful substances. Those that called us conspiracy theorists will have themselves to blame.”

Edo, Oyo, Bauchi, Others Lament Poor Compliance With COVID-19 Protocols As Vaccination Kicks Off

Edo, Oyo, Bauchi, Others Lament Poor Compliance With COVID-19 Protocols As Vaccination Kicks Off

A number of states, including Edo, Osun, Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara and Cross River have expressed frustration at the poor compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols by their people.

According to the Punch, the various state governments said this had led to the increased number of COVID-19 cases recorded by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

Medical Gear

This was as the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and the Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, received their first COVID-19 vaccine shots on Saturday in Abuja.

Dr Cyprian Ngon of the National Hospital Abuja had become the first Nigerian to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria on Friday.

Nearly four million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Abuja on March 2. The shipment was said to be the third and largest delivery to be made by the global COVAX initiative, which was created to ensure that low- and middle-income countries have fair access to doses.

In Edo State, the COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr Andrew Obi, while speaking with journalists in Benin City, the state capital, said it was discouraging that residents were refusing to comply with the government’s directive to tackle infection spread.

“It is quite discouraging that while the government steps up measures to protect residents against this deadly virus, some recalcitrant members of society have disregarded these orders, thereby endangering the lives of others,” Obi said.

He appealed to the people to complement the state government’s efforts at curbing the community spread of the virus by complying with the government’s COVID-19 protocols.

“We call on all residents to adhere to the compulsory use of face masks and other precautionary measures against the spread of the coronavirus as the government alone cannot win this battle,” he said.

In a similar vein, the Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Saturday decried poor compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols, urging the people of the state to adhere to them.

Oyetola said this at the special prayer session to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his late mother, Alhaja Wulaimot Oyetola, held at the deceased’s residence at Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government Area of the state.

“I am using this occasion to appeal to our people to take COVID-19 protocols more seriously than before and stop insinuating that the virus has been eliminated.

“As we can see and hear, the second wave is deadlier, hence the need for all to adhere strictly to all the safety protocols and guidelines,” he said.

The governor described his late mother as a woman of virtue and an epitome of womanhood, adding that he was what he was today because of his parents’ teachings.

Also, in Bauchi State, the Chairman of the state Task Force on COVID-19, Dr Rilwan Mohammed, expressed worry about the people’s refusal to adhere to COVID-19 protocols.

He advised that people should not see the availability of vaccines as a reason to defy the protocols.

Mohammed, who is also the Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, said, “I don’t know why people are refusing to adhere to the protocols even with the fact that we are currently having a second wave of the pandemic.

“Children are already being infected in the second wave. The people should take COVID-19 seriously because it is still deadly.

“People should wear their face masks, use hand sanitisers, observe social distancing, among others. It is unfortunate that many people no longer observe the protocols. If you go to the banks and other crowded places, you will see people without face masks.”

Mohammed said even after receiving vaccination, people should still observe the protocols.

In Zamfara State, the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Yahaya Kanoma, also asked the people to keep observing the safety protocols despite the discovery of vaccines for the disease.

“People should be very careful and should not discard COVID-19 protocols simply because of the vaccines. Even if one is vaccinated, he or she should not abandon the use of face masks as well as keeping social distancing,” he said.

Similarly, the Incident Manager and Coordinator, COVID-19 Emergency Operations Centre in Oyo State, Dr Taiwo Ladipo, warned about the danger of failing to comply with the protocols, saying that vaccines “are not an absolute guarantee against the virus.”

He said, “The vaccines do not prevent you from getting the virus. What the vaccine does is just to boost your immunity against getting it.

“The vaccine, therefore, is to reduce the severity of the virus. Despite the provision for the vaccine, people should adhere to the COVID-19 protocols such as hand washing, use of sanitisers, social distancing and the use of face masks. These have to be observed even when you take the vaccine shots.”

Also, the Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, decried poor compliance with COVID-19 protocols, advising the people of the state to keep adhering to the guidelines.

“Nigerians should continue to observe COVID-19 protocols despite the procurement of vaccines as the vaccines do not provide 100 per cent protection.

“The people should continue to use their face masks, hand sanitisers and other non-pharmaceutical interventions until Nigeria attains herd immunity. Even though the vaccine provides immunity, you can still get the virus through the nostril and pass it on to someone else,” she said.

Meanwhile, in preparation for the receipt of vaccines, Edu said the state would spend over N30 million as counterpart funding for the first phase of the vaccine roll-out.

She said, “We should be spending over N30m for the first phase of the rollout, which includes e-training.

“We have built cold stores as part of the funding. We have test-run all our cold chain equipment which are supposed to receive the vaccines, and they are ready to go.”

Zamfara No-fly Zone Directive Shows Nigeria Is At War — Aare Ona Kakanfo

Zamfara No-fly Zone Directive Shows Nigeria Is At War — Aare Ona Kakanfo

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has said the current situation of things in the country is proof that the nation is ‘at war’.

He noted that for the Nigerian government to announce Zamfara state a no-fly zone was an indication of war.

Gani Adams

Gani Adams, who spoke at a press briefing in Lagos on Friday, said a stakeholders' meeting, scheduled for March 17, will proffer the next line of action for Yoruba in terms of security and economy.

He called on different stakeholders and traditional rulers in the South-West region to participate in the conference.

He said, “When you have certain part of Nigeria's territory that you cannot fly to for security reason, it is an indication of war and when the drum of war is beating, you have to prepare yourself. We are not saying we want war, but self-defense is not a crime.

“We can’t fold our arms when these criminals show more than 200 AK-47s (and) ammunition, it is an indication of war and anybody that is telling you that no war in Nigeria is deceiving him or herself. If the federal government can announce no flying zone in Zamfara, that was a statement of war.”

He, however, described the recent shoot-on-sight directive given by the Presidency as a welcome development.

He added: “It’s in order, any person with AK-47 in the bush should be shot. As herders, you can move around with cutlass in the bush because you may get to certain place and need to cut some grass but gun without being licensed is a security threat.

“If you allow herders to carry AK-47, you have to allow our farmers to also carry AK-47 because they are both in the same line of profession which is agricultural sector.”

Zamfara Residents Vow To Kill Any Visiting Government Official, Security Operative After Killing Of Teenager By Nigerian Soldiers

Zamfara Residents Vow To Kill Any Visiting Government Official, Security Operative After Killing Of Teenager By Nigerian Soldiers

Some residents of Jangebe, the Zamfara community where some secondary schoolgirls were abducted last week have vowed to kill any government official or security operative who visited the community over the killing of a teenager by Nigerian soldiers during a protest on Wednesday.

Some youths in the community were said to have staged a protest when Zamfara government officials came to the town to reunite the abducted schoolgirls with their parents.

Suspected bandits had attacked Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, on February 26 and kidnapped 279 schoolgirls. The girls were later released after spending a few days in captivity.

After the students regained freedom, the government took them for counselling and rehabilitation.

On Wednesday, they were brought back to the community to reunite with their family members.

Pandemonium however broke out after anxious parents disrupted the speech of Alhaji Nasiru Muazu Magarya, Speaker of the Zamfara House of Assembly, and forcefully took their daughters away.

The schoolgirls, who arrived at the school in the evening, were seated in the examination hall and were being addressed by the Speaker when the visibly disturbed parents broke into the hall and started hurling insults at the dignitaries that were meant to address the parents and the schoolgirls.

The programme was disrupted and after sensing trouble, the Speaker and commissioners attending the event quickly left.

Shots were fired by men of the Nigerian army to disperse the crowd that was waiting outside the school.

The youths also began to throw stones at the security operatives.

There has been tension in Jangebe since the abduction of the girls, with the youths stopping security operatives and government officials from entering the main town.

A teenager was however killed in the clash between the security operatives and youths in the community.

“We are going to kill any government official or security operative that visit our village again over the life of the boy that was shot dead by soldiers during yesterday’s protest,” a villager told SaharaReporters.

Another resident accused security operatives of opening fire on innocent people.

He said Jangebe youths had a meeting and vowed to attack any government official and security operative seen in the community.

He berated the state government for declaring a curfew in the town.

The Zamfara state government on Thursday had however imposed an indefinite curfew on the community.

Commissioner for Information, Sulaiman Anka, in a statement said the government imposed the curfew to prevent further breach of peace.

“Similarly, there is strong discovered evidence of market activities in the town that aid and abet bandits’ activities in the town and neighbouring communities.
“Consequently, all market activities in the town are hereby suspended until further notice,” the statement read.

“The state government is poised to ensure safety of lives and properties of its citizens at all cost.

“With this announcement, the Zamfara State Police Command is hereby enjoined to ensure total enforcement.”

Students, Parents, Teachers Beg Kwara Government To Restore Schools To Their Past Glory

Students, Parents, Teachers Beg Kwara Government To Restore Schools To Their Past Glory

Once upon a time, the Government Girls Day Secondary School Okesuna in Ilorin had good amenities. It was renowned for its discipline and well equipped facilities like laboratory, library, toilets, proper fence and many more.

Now the school has passed into decrepitude. It is not only that facilities have deteriorated, the school lacks teachers for essential subjects.

“The government is aware of the situation of the school because letters have been written to them many times and nothing has been done,” said  a teacher who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she feared she could be punished for granting an interview.

“We lack teachers, especially chemistry and civic education teachers,” a student told our reporters.  “But recently, we've been provided with a chemistry teacher while we are still left without a civic education teacher,” the student added.

Another run down school is Tanke LGEA at Tanke area in Ilorin South Local Government Area. Comprising primary and junior secondary, the school lacks a library, laboratory and adequate classrooms.

The only toilet in the school is reserved for the staff while  the students are expected to find other means of relieving themselves.

Some students are forced to sit on the floor as some of the classes are without desks and chairs.

“We can't do most things ourselves as we do not have the capacity to do so,” said a teacher who spoke to the reporter.  “But we use the PTA levy to renovate the most demanding situations as we have been severally written to the government without a reply.”

At Fate Basin Primary and Secondary School, the appalling state of the facilities is apparent. Students do not have access to toilets, library and laboratory. The school is located at the centre of Fate and Basin communities in Ilorin South local Government Area.

“We have a shortage of teachers due to the fact that most of our teachers were sacked a few months ago by the state government,” said the headmistress of the primary school. She added she had sought government’s intervention without success.

Such neglect is happening at Government Girl's Day Secondary School in Pakata in Ilorin West Local Government. The school lacks toilets, laboratory, and good staff rooms.

The school library is an old container in the middle of the school premises. The library is always hot during the day which makes it hard for students to study.

One of the students told our correspondents they suffer a lot just to learn. “We normally do alternatives to practical since we lack apparatus to carry out real practicals because our laboratory was just built with bad furniture (Biology and Agric laboratory) while others are not equipped ( Chemistry and Physics Laboratory). We also lack teachers, especially physics, chemistry, English, literature and maths. We only have 2 english for all SS classes and it's not enough.”

The school library

The teachers and students who spoke to our correspondent urged the government to help make the school conducive for learning like it used to be in the past.

Nigerian Soldier Commits Suicide In Bauchi

A soldier with the Nigerian army school of armour in Bauchi has killed himself.

The soldier was said to be one of those newly recruited in 2020, and his first posting had been the army's school of armour in Bauchi.

File Photo

"He was on duty alongside his colleagues. They were all discussing normal soldier things and suddenly, he pulled out his gun and shot himself in the stomach," military sources have told TheCable.

"We couldn't even rush him to the hospital as he died on the spot."

His body has been deposited at the mortuary in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBU), Bauchi.

The other soldiers he was with at the time of the incident have been locked in the guardroom, pending investigation.

The incident, sources said, has been communicated to the army headquarters, and a board had been set up in the barracks to investigate the matter.

Mohammed Yerima, the army spokesperson, was not immediately available to comment on the incident.

Before this incident, there have been other instances where soldiers killed themselves.

In 2017, a soldier committed suicide after killing a captain in Chibok, Borno state.

Another soldier also hung himself to death inside the barracks in Abuja in 2019.

In 2020, a soldier fighting Boko Haram insurgents committed suicide, leaving a note for his wife.

BREAKING: Shoot Anyone Seen With AK-47, Buhari Directs Security Agents

BREAKING: Shoot Anyone Seen With AK-47, Buhari Directs Security Agents

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed security agencies to shoot anyone seen with AK-47.

Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in an interview with the BBC.

He said the President directed a clampdown on bandits who have refused to surrender.

On the efforts being made to rid Zamfara and other northern states of bandits, Shehu said the government is resorting to lethal force.

“The president has ordered security forces to go into the bushes and shoot whoever they see with sophisticated weapons like AK-47,” he said.

“He ordered that whoever is seen with terrible weapons at all should be shot immediately.”

Shehu also said the Nigerian government declared Zamfara a no-fly zone following intelligence that arms were being transported to the bandits with private jets.

“These jets are being used to pick up gold that is being mined in some parts of Zamfara and exported. This is strong because at the moment, there is a Nigerian gold market in Dubai. The government is losing, the people of this country are losing, that’s why it is said that gold mining is banned for those who are not made by the government," he said.

Tension As Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers, Burn Patrol Vehicle In Anambra

Tension As Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers, Burn Patrol Vehicle In Anambra

Residents and indigenes of Ekwulobia in Anambra State are living in fear following the death of two police officers killed by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums.

Ekwulobia is said to be one of the largest cities in Anambra State after Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi.

A video clip of the incident seen by SaharaReporters show the bodies of the slain officers dumped by the roadside.

It was not yet clear if the hoodlums carted away their rifles during the attack.

The attack comes less than 24 hours after a police station was attacked and two officers killed in Aba, Abia state.

SaharaReporters gathered that an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and a Police Corporal were killed in the attack.

The attackers also broke into a store where arms were kept and carted them away.

Lagos Trigger-happy Policeman Shatters Barber’s Leg With Gunshots During Raid

Lagos Trigger-happy Policeman Shatters Barber’s Leg With Gunshots During Raid

A trigger-happy policeman attached to the Lagos State Task Force has damaged the leg of a barber, Onyekachi Chinedum, when he shot at passersby during a raid on commercial motorcyclists, known as okada riders, in the Alimosho area of the state.

SaharaReporters learnt that Chinedum, a 37-year-old barber, was returning from his shop and had wanted to use an Automated Teller Machine when the bullets hit him.

He was thereafter rushed to a number of private hospitals in the area, as they rejected him one after the other.

He was later referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi because of the seriousness of his condition.

SaharaReporters gathered that the policeman in question bragged that he was unchallengeable while chasing the okada riders, threatening to shoot at anyone of them.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, Chinedum, who was writhing in pain, said the doctor had booked him for a surgery and he was helpless.

He said, “I closed from my shop yesterday, Monday, and someone transferred some money to my bank account which I wanted to use an ATM nearby to withdraw. The next thing I heard were gunshots. As I was trying to hide from the continuous gunshots, I found myself on the floor and knew I had been shot in the leg.

“I am in pain. The doctor said I would undergo a surgery. I have just one person with me. I don’t even know how to get out of this.”

He, however, said he did not know the name of the policeman.

A source told SaharaReporters that the policemen shot indiscriminately in the area.

“The policemen from the task force stormed the Akowonjo roundabout and began to shoot indiscriminately. The man was on his way home from work and as he stood at the roundabout to use an ATM and was talking to a friend, he was shot.

“He is a barber and a Paga operator. His shop is opposite the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat. He was transferred to Igbobi after he was rejected by all the private hospitals in the area.

“The statement made by the policeman was ‘nobody dares to challenge me’. It was said that they came to the Akowonjo roundabout to raid okada riders,” the source said.

Nigerian youths last year organised #EndSARS protests in some states in the country, demanding that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad should be disbanded.

SARS was a special police unit notorious for extrajudicial killings and extortion and human rights violations.

The unit was disbanded but police brutality in the country has not abated.

Obiozor said this on Monday when he led a delegation to the palace of the traditional ruler of Amaifeke in the Orlu Local Government Area of the state.

He said, “The use of the violent method will lead to a synchronised national crisis and ultimate disintegration of Nigeria; this too must be avoided.
“Nigeria is in a precarious situation and a great caution must be taken by the leadership to avoid events that have the capacity of incrementally aggravating or opening more threats of national crisis.”

He described the problem of insecurity in the country as a national emergency.

Reacting, Eze Okeke, who is the Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers, said, “It is surprising to people that this crisis is happening in Orsu in Orlu zone. It should have taken place in the bush instead of the town. We don’t want war but peace.”

Gunmen Kill Okowa's Aide, Four Policemen, Cart-Away Rifles

Gunmen Kill Okowa's Aide, Four Policemen, Cart-Away Rifles

Unknown gunmen in a white Venza car have killed the Special Assistant to Delta State Governor on Youth Development, Okiemute Sowho, also known as Daddy K.

On Saturday evening, he was killed along Crudas axis by Akintola Road, Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

Sources said the killing might have been carried out by assassins as nothing was stolen from the deceased after being shot dead.

Giving details of the killings of the governor's aide and the four mobile policemen, a source, who does not want his name mentioned, told SaharaReporters that the governor's aide, who is in his early 40s, was shot at a close range.

"Okiemute was rushed by sympathizers to a private hospital in the area where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival. His corpse was immediately deposited in the morgue," the source said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright, confirmed the murder of  Sowho.

"Yes, we have a report that an aide to the governor was killed; though, we are yet to get detail," he said.

Meanwhile, two policemen were reportedly ambushed and killed at the Mile 5 area of Ugbolu and Illah communities near Asaba, Delta State capital.

"Just on Thursday here, along the popular airport road in Effurun, a mobile policeman was killed by gunmen and their service rifles were carted away. On Sunday last week, another mobile policeman on escort duty was killed by gunmen at a church in Otor-Ogor near Ughelli and had his service rifle also carted away."

SaharaReporters gathered that recent attacks on police officers and police formations in different parts of the state have prompted the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ali, to order security reinforcement at the state police headquarters in Asaba over fears of a likely attack.

"In order not to be taken unawares, the CP on Tuesday had an emergency security meeting with all area commanders, divisional police officers and unit commanders in the state to brainstorm on how to tackle the rise in crime in the state."

Police Operate In Fear As Herdsmen Kill Seven In Edo

Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have reportedly killed seven persons, including farmers at Ugboke, Oshodi, Okokodo, Ariyan and Yoruba Camp in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the PPRO of the State Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident and said all efforts were being made to arrest the perpetrators.

File photo used to illustrate story.

According to Mrs Janet Ighodaro, an indigene of the area, the residents were caught unawares by the blood-thirsty herdsmen.

She said, "The suspected herdsmen took over the popularly known Yoruba camp located in Ovia North-East as a base to launch attacks into various communities in our state.

"Four of the victims were returning from their farm when they were shot and killed on the spot. I was lucky to escape and I am currently in Benin where I am putting up with family members."

She lamented that the gruesome attack on the camps and communities was reported to the police, adding that security presence in the locality was zero.

Ighodaro stressed that the policemen, who came to the area on Thursday after the dastardly act, only stopped at Okokhua community.

She added that the policemen insisted that they would not go further but instructed the affected communities to bring the dead bodies to them at Okokhuo.

Nwabuzor confirmed the incident and promised that the criminals would be arrested and brought to justice.

He said, "The DPO and his operatives visited the crime site and evacuated the bodies while moves are on to ensure that the place is calm and lives return to normalcy."

I Only Asked Nigerians To Be More Courageous — Defence Minister Defends Comment Amid Backlash

I Only Asked Nigerians To Be More Courageous — Defence Minister Defends Comment Amid Backlash

The Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi, has defended his earlier comment that Nigerians should stop being cowards and fight against bandits’ attack.

Magashi had while addressing newsmen on Wednesday said Nigerians should be courageous enough when bandits fire “minor” shots.

Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi (rtd)

He had said: “At times, the bandits will only come with about three rounds of ammunition, when they fire shots everybody runs. In our younger days, we stand to fight any aggression coming for us…

“I don’t know why people are running from minor things like that. They should stand and let these people know that even the villagers have the competency and capability to defend themselves.”

His comment had generated public criticism with many Nigerians accusing him of being insensitive to the plights of citizens amid rising insecurity in the country. See Also Insecurity PDP Seeks Defence Minister's Sacking For Calling Nigerians Cowards, Asking Them To Fight Bandits, Terrorists

But reacting on Thursday, Magashi said he didn’t ask Nigerians to kill one another, but that those who are being attacked should learn to make sacrifices and resist running and protect themselves in the little way they can.

“I didn’t say they should go and kill themselves, but they should watch and see what will happen before they take the step of abandoning their house simply because somebody has made a shot or two. That’s what I was trying to say, I didn’t say Nigerians should defend themselves. See Also Politics Nigerians React To Minister Of Defence’s Statement That Nigerians Are Cowards

“I only said that every attack should not be seen as ‘if I don’t run away there’s nothing else I can do’. There are so many ways you can defend yourself, you can hide and watch what he is doing and as soon as he exhausts his strength, then you can run over him that’s what I mean.”

Speaking further, he advised Nigerians to be more courageous and “If there are one or two people shooting in the air just to scare them, steal their things or kidnap some people”.

According to him, the villagers can resist attacks by understanding simple techniques of protecting themselves.

"How many houses can they enter before they finish their ammunition?" Magashi quipped.

Asked how those attacked can defend themselves against bandits, the minister reiterated that they should not exhibit cowardice and “see the first attempt as a wakeup call, find yourself in a good position, if they want to overrun you, then you run away."

He said: “There is no need to allow small people on two motorcycles to come and destroy a whole village, that’s what I mean and they should know that the people there will resist them. If they (bandits) know that they can be resisted, then they probably can need more firepower to come there, before they have that power, the military or police should have that information which they will come and protect them in more strength and commitment that’s what I mean (sic).”

On if Nigerians should bear arms, the minister maintained that the time is not auspicious enough as the Nigerian government needs to be more prepared.

“I don’t think it is an appropriate time for Nigerians to be armed. I think we need more time to think about it, more enlightenment. The country should be well prepared to understand the sacrifices that one does, everyone should know their limitations, there are law and order and there is respect for human rights. If all these are achieved, probably we can allow some people to hold arms.”

Bandits Attack Easily Because Nigerians Are Cowards — Defence Minister, Magashi

Bandits Attack Easily Because Nigerians Are Cowards — Defence Minister, Magashi

Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi, has blamed residents of Kagara in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State for the recent abduction of secondary school students in the community.

SaharaReporters had reported how gunmen suspected to be bandits stormed the Government Science College, Kagara on Wednesday, abducting many students and workers.

Defence Minister, Major-General Bashir Magashi.

Describing Nigerians, particularly in the North where banditry is rife as cowards, Magashi said all Nigerians have a responsibility to ensure there is adequate security within their areas.

Speaking with newsmen on the sidelines of the screening of service chiefs by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Magashi said, “Well, is it not the responsibility of the military alone? It is the responsibility of everybody to be alert and ensure safety when necessary.

“We shouldn’t be cowards. Sometimes the bandits come with about three rounds of ammunition and when they fire shots everybody will run. In our younger days, we stand to fight any form of aggression.

“Why should people run away from minor, minor aggressions? We should stand and face them. If these people know that the people have the competence and capability to defend themselves, they will run away.”

The minister also boasted that all abducted students would be rescued soon.

He said the service chiefs would swing into action immediately they are through with the screening exercise by the lawmakers and track down the kidnappers to rescue the children.

Magashi said, ''We have demonstrated our ability to take on the challenge. We have done it in Katsina; when children were kidnapped. Within two days, we got them back. Hopefully, this time, we will do the same (thing) to get these captives back. We are planning.

“We have not got feedback on the activities going on in Niger State. But I am sure that before the end of the day, we will be given a full brief on what is going on in Niger State.”

Over 300 schoolboys who were abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State last December were not released until six days later, contrary to the statement made by the defence minister that they were released two days later.

They were kidnapped on the evening of December 11, 2020, and it was not until December 17, 2020, that the students regained their freedom.

The minister also dismissed the clamour from some quarters for Nigerians to be allowed to bear arms to defend themselves.

“It is an issue currently even in the developed country. They are still debating on whether to continue (to allow people to bear arms) or stop. But I don’t advise Nigerians to bear firearms for internal use,” he added.

Magashi recently made headlines for justifying the assault, molestation, and attack on peaceful #EndSARS protesters by security operatives at the Lekki toll gate.

Speaking on Saturday after participating in the revalidation exercise of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, the minister had described some of the protesters as rogues and thieves.

“This #EndSARS issue, if you recall, the minister of information has briefed this nation and alerted that something like this is coming; and we know we are always prepared. This is our job, to ensure internal security,” he said.

“We must plan for it. We don’t want to be taken by surprise. And if you want us to be taken by surprise, then, there is no need to call us protectors. If #EndSARS is to take place today, we will ensure that we have peaceful counter plans that we will put in place to ensure that mistakes are not made in protecting the people.

“You know the composition of the EndSARS crowd. Over 60 percent of them are people who don’t even know why they are there. They just come to take part. Some of them are rogues; some are there to steal. They want to do whatever they think. There are a few actual people.”

BREAKING: Police Attack, Arrest #OccupyLekkiTollGate Protesters

BREAKING: Police Attack, Arrest #OccupyLekkiTollGate Protesters

Some #OccupyLekkiTollGate protesters were on Saturday attacked and arrested by the police in Lagos State.

The protesters were arrested around 7:50 am, SaharaReporters has gathered.

"Why are you after us. We have a right to protest. I could have been crushed by a car as the police were running after me for protesting," one of them was heard saying as the police manhandled him and forced him into a white Hilux van to an unknown destination.

The plan to #OccupyLekkiTollGate came after the controversial ruling of the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry to reopen the Lekki toll gate.

The panel, headed by Doris Okuwobi, a retired judge, on Saturday ruled in favour of the Lekki Concession Company, LCC, to repossess the toll plaza for repairs and insurance claims.

The ruling was supported by five members out of the nine-man panel, with four other members, including Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and the youth representatives dissenting to the ruling.

Despite the dissenting ruling, the Lekki Toll Plaza has been handed over to LCC for reopening.
State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu said 'security agencies would not fold their arms' as youths plan fresh protests against police brutality and extortion.

The police boss said such demonstration, whether peaceful or violent, would not be allowed to take place as the government and people of Lagos still nurse the wounds of the recent #EndSARS violence that wreaked havoc across the state.
