'Shocked' Gold Coast residents to hold vigil for Kelly Wilkinson

The "shocked" Gold Coast community will today remember Kelly Wilkinson, the mother of three allegedly murdered by her estranged husband.

State MP Sam O'Connor has organised a candlelight vigil to be held at the Gold Coast Titans training oval at The Club at Parkwood Village.

Ms Wilkinson, a 27-year-old mother-of-three, was found with burns to her body in the backyard of a home in Arundel last Tuesday morning. Her estranged partner, Brian Johnston, 34, has been charged with her murder.

Kelly Wilkinson was allegedly murdered by her estranged partner.

Mr O'Connor told Today that Ms Wilkinson's family were holding up despite the strain of her death.

"They are doing it pretty tough as you can imagine. But they're focusing on the practicalities. Kelly leaves behind three beautiful kids and one of her sisters who already has five kids of her own, looks like she will be taking them."

But he said the entire Gold Coast community had also been affected by Ms WIlkinson's death.

"They're doing it tough. You never expect this sort of thing to happen in your own area and a lot of people are feeling this over the last week ... They really are shocked by this tragedy."

The vigil will start at 4.45pm.

There have been calls for a wide-ranging review into the domestic violence system following Ms Wilkinson's death.

Mr O'Connor said there was widespread community concern about the reporting of domestic violence and the response by authorities.

"It is one of the toughest issues out there. But firstly, in this case, people are absolutely shocked by the amount of contact she had with the police and with other service organisations and that this could still happen," he said.

Queensland Police announced last week Ms Wilkinson's interactions with the force would be the subject of an internal review.

Mr O'Connor also said an online fund raising campaign for Ms Wilkinson's three children had reached $200,000.

If you need help or support, contact the National Domestic Violence Service on 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732). If you are in immediate danger call triple zero (000).

The vigil will start at 4.45pm today.
