AirTag retail box updated with new button-battery warning label

In mid-April the world's biggest tech company announced an all-new product, the Apple AirTag.

The small device would allow users to locate misplaced or lost keys or other items in the area around them, or rely on a global network featuring tens of millions of iPhones to help you find it anywhere.

After just days on-sale in Australia, several retailers pulled the Apple AirTags from sale without any regulatory instruction, citing the button-battery used to power the AirTag as a risk to the safety of young children.

In Australia, many young children are hospitalised each week after swallowing batteries the size of 10c coins or smaller.

Several children have died from the internal injuries created by such incidents.

As a result, standards around the world require a two-step process for the removal of the batteries.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced new packaging requirements which come into force in June 2022.

When Officeworks removed the AirTag from sale, an Apple spokesperson told 9News that "AirTag is designed to meet international child safety standards, including those in Australia, by requiring a two step push-and-turn mechanism to access the user-replaceable battery".

"We are following the regulations closely and are working to ensure that our products will meet or exceed new standards, including those for package labelling, well ahead of the timeline required," the spokesperson said.

9News can now reveal that Apple will this week introduce new packaging into Australia, which features the button-battery warning label on the outside of the box, as well as additional information inside the instructions.

These changes come a full 12 months ahead of the required compliance deadline, showing Apple has come good on their earlier commitment to change the labelling well ahead of the timeline required.

It's not yet known if these changes will result in the Apple AirTags returning to sale at Officeworks, JB HiFi and other retailers.
