Locked-down Sydney braced for new surge in COVID-19 cases

Sydney is braced for another wave of COVID-19 cases today as the Bondi cluster continues to grow.

There were 30 new cases recorded on Sunday, with the weekend seeing Greater Sydney placed into a two-week lockdown.

It's believed NSW could record up to 20 further cases today, not all of whom were in isolation before being tested.

Borders have been closed to NSW around the country as other states and territories also grapple with outbreaks.

Authorities are urging Sydney residents to stay up to date with the growing list of exposure sites and to make sure they get tested if they feel any potential COVID-19 symptoms.

Tens of thousands of people were tested over the weekend.

"If we all take this very seriously, we maintain those testing numbers, then two weeks (of lockdown) may be sufficient," Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has declared the JobKeeper wage subsidy will not be revived in response to ballooning virus cases across Australia.

Mr Frydenberg told Today the Federal Government was already providing additional economic support for businesses hit by lockdowns.
