El Chapo's hot-tub tunnel home up for grabs in Mexican auction

It may not seem like a palatial mansion, but you could have a chance at owning this home in Culiacan, Mexico, for just 250 pesos (A$16).

The home has two bedrooms, a living room, a garage and a secret tunnel leading from the hot tub to another home, should the Federales bust in.

If all this is sounding a little familiar, there's a reason.

Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman fled the authorities through a trapdoor under his bathtub.

This house being raffled off by the Mexican government was formerly the home of notorious cartel kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

It's valued at A$256,000, but under the government's raffle system, you could win it for much, much less.

The home was seized by police in 2014 in a bid to arrest Guzman, but the Sinaloa cartel boss escaped through an underground tunnel.

They also found plastic bananas stuffed with cocaine and plastic cucumbers stuffed with marijuana.

Those do not come as part of the raffle prize.

The prospect of owning Guzman's former home in Culiacan may make many people a little nervous.

Not far away, more than 700 cartel gunmen forced the retreat of Mexican national guardsmen who tried to arrest Guzman's son in 2019.

The Mexico City mansion of the former head of the Juarez Cartel is also available.

The more than 3000-square-metre home has an indoor pool, nine rooms, spas, saunas and a ballroom.

That home also went to market for about A$3.3 million, but a buyer did not come forward.

A private box at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City will also be given away in the raffle.

Proceeds from the raffle will go towards vaccines, scholarships and wellness programs.
