Father and son caught trying to leave lockdown zone after potential COVID-19 exposure

A father and son have been fined for breaching COVID-19 public health orders after they were caught attempting to leave the Greater Sydney lockdown zone following a potential exposure to a confirmed case.

The pair had left their home in Wollongong and were travelling in a van on Picton Road at Wilton, near the Hume Highway, when they were pulled over by police.

They told officers they were travelling to Mittagong to stay with a relative for two weeks, as the father had attended a location in the Illawarra on the same day as a confirmed COVID-19 case.

In what police described as "suspicious", neither appeared to have packed any luggage in their van for their two-week stay in the regional community.

Roughly an hour's drive south-west of Wollongong, Mittagong is in the Southern Highlands and is not subject to the Greater Sydney stay-at-home orders.

The only allowable reasons for residents to leave lockdown in Greater Sydney is to attend the funeral of a spouse, parent, child or sibling or to attend essential work.

The father and son duo were both fined for breaching public health orders.

They were escorted back to Wollongong by police and directed to return home.

It is the second time the father has been fined for breaking the stay-at-home orders.
