Home quarantine will be trialled for vaccinated travellers

Home quarantine will be trialled for fully vaccinated returning travellers as part of National Cabinet's four-point plan out of the pandemic.

Australia will trial and pilot the program with individual jurisdictions during the later phases of the plan.

"The work that we have already done ... shows that a vaccinated person doing quarantine for seven days is stronger than an unvaccinated person doing quarantine for 14 days," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in Canberra today after the National Cabinet meeting.

"There is clear medical evidence to suggest that vaccination means that shorter periods of quarantine is possible without any compromise of the health and safety standards that is currently delivered by a 14-day quarantine for unvaccinated persons."

Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly said factors such as where people travelled from and their vaccination status will be considered before home quarantine is granted.

"Seven days of home quarantine can be very similar to the outcome of 14 days' hotel quarantine," he said.

"That needs to be worked through in terms of implementation of that, and that compliance piece is the most important, if people are staying at home, it's actually can be safer for them and the community because of the decreased interaction with staff."

All arrivals into Australia are currently required to quarantine for 14 days in hotels or at the purpose-built facility at Howard Springs, near Darwin.
