Man seriously injured after allegedly being bashed by truck driver

A man has been left with serious head injuries after a truck driver allegedly bashed him with a metal pole at a petrol station north of Melbourne last night.

The truck driver remains on the run and a crime scene has been set up at the BP service station on the Hume Freeway in Wallan.

Police were told the man stopped at the service station about 7.30pm before a verbal altercation erupted between him and the truck driver while filling up at the bowser.

The truck driver allegedly hit the side of the man's head with a metal pole, before getting back in his truck and driving north on the freeway.

It is believed the truck driver was driving a white semi towing a single trailer.

The victim, a 24-year-old Fawkner man, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital.

The truck driver, believed to be aged in his 40s, is said to be caucasian in appearance and bald with a beer belly.

He was wearing shorts and a grey t-shirt at the time of the alleged assault.

Investigators have urged anyone who witnessed the incident, or with information about the truck driver's identity, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
