Sydney has disappeared behind a soupy layer of fog for the third consecutive day with more cold and wet weather on the way for the state.

The thick fog has prompted warnings for drivers with reduced visibility on the roads.

The conditions are expected to clear throughout the day with a sunny afternoon and maximum of 19C on the way.

A second city has disappeared below the clouds this morning with Brisbane also blanketed in fog.

Conditions won't improve much for Brisbane today with cloudy conditions most of the day and a chance of showers, most likely in the late morning and afternoon.

There's also a chance of a thunderstorm later on with a minimum of 15C and top of 21C.

Troughs in the east are being fed by moist winds, bringing rain and the odd storm to eastern Queensalnd and NSW.

The cold weather is set to deliver snow across elevated areas in NSW this weekend.

The airmass on Saturday is forecast to be particularly cold in the wake of the front, with snow predicted to fall as low as 800 metres.

Forecasters are predicting some fresh snow by Saturday morning, continuing through Saturday.

Snow may fall up high today during daylight hours, but there will likely be rain at elevations below about 1600 or 1700 metres.

While the snow would normally be good news for holidaymakers hoping to enjoy the state's ski resorts, a strict stay at home order remains in place for Greater Sydney due to COVID-19 with people elsewhere being urged to avoid any unnecessary travel plans.
