US dad loses job after rescuing daughters from sinking car

A US father has been filmed rescuing his two daughters from their car as it slowly sank in a river.

Harley Day had stepped out of his car for a moment when one of the girls put it in neutral on Sunday in Owensboro, Kentucky.

The car rolled into the Ohio River, running over Mr Day in the process.

"My side is very sore from being drug across the concrete and having that much weight on me," he said.

"I do believe my elbow is broke, it's disformed and all cut up."

Dramatic footage shot by a bystander shows the injured Mr Day trying desperately to get his little girls to dry land.

"The only thing going through my mind, you know, was if my kids were alright," he told WFIE.

"I wasn't worried about my vehicle or myself. I was just worried about the safety of my kids."

Mr Day is now unemployed, since his job as a pizza delivery driver needed him to have a vehicle.

He said the family lost a month's worth of nappies, baby formula, social security and Medicaid cards, birth certificates and cash.
