Earthquake sends shudders through Tokyo

A major earthquake has struck off the coast Japan, sending a series of aftershocks through Tokyo.

The magnitude 6.0 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture at 5.33am local time.

No tsunami alert has been issued and there have been no reports of injury so far.

Nine reporter Christine Ahern in Tokyo spoke with 3AW hosts Ross and Russel as an aftershock hit.

"It appears that we're having a little bit of an aftershock," she said.

"As the building sways back and forwards the laptop on the table, as I speak, is shaking a little.

"We're on the tenth floor so you can feel it quite a bit."

The city has recently endured the impacts of a major storm Nepartak which caused heavy rain, winds and rough seas on the coast of Japan less than a fortnight ago.
