Fortescue mine site in WA shut down after 'significant incident'

A mine site in Western Australia's Pilbara region has been forced to suspend all operations following a "significant incident" involving a worker.

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) advised that the incident – the exact details of which are not yet known – occurred at its Solomon Hub this morning.

The Solomon Hub is an iron ore mine located 60km north of Tom Price and 120km to the west of FMG's Chichester Hub in the Chichester Ranges.

In a statement, FMG said a full investigation into the incident is being conducted and the mining group is working closely with WA Police and the WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.

CEO Elizabeth Gaines said the business was currently focused on supporting its workers.

"The safety and wellbeing of our team members is our highest priority and at this time our focus is on ensuring that support is being provided to our employees and contractors," she said.

The welfare of the employee at the centre of the incident is not yet known.
