Man shot dead by police after injuring multiple people at Auckland supermarket

A man has been shot dead by police after he entered a New Zealand supermarket and injured multiple people.

Emergency services were called to the Countdown store at LynnMall shopping centre in New Lynn, in Auckland's west, around 3pm today (1pm AEST).

Police said the man was located by officers and was shot. He died at the scene.

Multiple videos posted on social media from the incident show people shouting and fleeing the mall.

A spokesman from Kiwi Property, which owns LynnMall, said it had been advised of an incident at the Countdown.

"The matter is now in the hands of the police, and we'll continue to provide them with our full assistance," he said.

Great North Road in New Lynn has been cordoned off, with a tweet from Auckland Transport stating more cordons were likely.

Chemist Warehouse staff, near the supermarket, were advised by officers to stay at the back.

Police said the incident was still unfolding, and they would provide further information when they could.
