'Key' alleged gang figure arrested as police launch clampdown

An alleged "key figure" of the Alameddine crime family was arrested overnight, as police today pledged to step up their efforts against organised crime in Sydney, following the shooting of 18-year-old Salim Hamze and his father in Guildford on Wednesday.

Police Minister David Elliott said in coming days, the feuding gangs in Sydney's south-west would be brought to account.

"We will not be taking our foot off the accelerator, we will not be taking our foot off their throats," Mr Elliott said.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon said police had never before had the degree of resources currently available to them.

He said police had launched Operation Clampdown Five, which would see 70 extra officers allocated to smashing the crime gangs.

"They will be supplemented at any time we believe is necessary," he said.

Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said that last night an alleged "key member" of the Alameddine crime group had been arrested at home.

Salim Hamze, 18, was shot dead in Sydney this morning alongside his father.

The 29-year-old man was allegedly in possession of two shotguns at his home in Mays Hill.

He will face court on drug and firearms charges today.

It is not believed the arrest is linked to the murders.

"We will continue to ramp up the response until all these individuals are behind bars where they belong, or the conflict ceases," Assistant Commissioner Smith said.

He said police had created 310 new profiles, and warned that the individuals who were the subject of those profiles should expect persistent police attention.

The increased police activity follows the double shooting in Guildford on Wednesday.

Guildford shooting

Police have said Salim Hamze, 18, was known to them and had been on bail over firearms offences.

His father, Toufik, 64, was not known to be involved in any criminal activity, police said.

Police are now investigating whether the double killing was retaliation for the murder of Shady Kanj, 22, who was gunned down at nearby Chester Hill in August.

9News understands Salim was a suspect in the death of Kanj, leading police to raid his Guildford home in August, where they found a firearm.
