One of the oldest coal-fired power stations in NSW demolished

One of the oldest coal-fired power stations in New South Wales has been demolished.

The chimney towers have been a recognisable part of the skyline in the state's Central Tablelands since the Wallerawang Power Station opened in May 1957.

But today the two 175-metre tall smokestacks and a boiler house erected during the region's coal mine boom have been flattened.

Two smokestacks have been a part of the Lithgow skyline for more than 50 years.

The power station in Lithgow once provided up to 15 per cent of the state's power before it was closed down in 2014.

The site is being repurposed to build a large battery to help NSW transition to renewable energy.
