Schoolies of 2021 best-behaved in years, police say

Queensland Police have hailed this year's Schoolies contingent as one of the best behaved in years - at least so far.

Speaking to media today, police said just six schoolies had been arrested over the first weekend of the 2021 event.

That compares to 21 "toolies" - older people who crash Schoolies events and parties - also finding themselves in cuffs.

Police said the 2021 crowd was the best-behaved cohort of school leavers since 2017.

Up to 20,000 former students were expected to flock to the Gold Coast, with volunteer groups and emergency services making extra preparations.

Justin Payne from the Queensland Ambulance Service said paramedics would be available to look after intoxicated teens, who are particularly at risk.

"The QAS is very concerned about drugs and alcohol and other high-risk activity, in particular the use of e-scooters around Surfers Paradise precinct," Mr Payne said.

Police have also been equipped with metal detectors to crack down on knife crime.
