Search for man who 'grabbed a Melbourne tram driver by the throat'

A man allegedly grabbed a Melbourne tram driver by throat after she asked him to get off the tram for being verbally abusive.

The man was riding the tram through St Kilda just after 4.40pm on November 13 with a young child when he allegedly became abusive.

According to police, when the tram driver then requested the man leave the tram, he went to the front of the carriage, reached through the driver's window and grabbed the driver by the throat.

Police are now searching for the man, who is believed to have boarded the tram outside the Balaclava Train Station about 4.40pm.

Police have a released of photo of a man they wish to speak to in the hope someone is able to identify him.
