Serbian fans celebrate Djokovic decision on the streets of Melbourne

Fans of Novak Djokovic have celebrated after the tennis player won his challenge to the Australian government's visa revocation.

Djokovic, 34, has been detained at a Melbourne immigration hotel since last week after the Federal Government cancelled his visa, saying he was unable to provide sufficient evidence to prove he was vaccinated against COVID-19 or qualified for a medical exemption.

A crowd has gathered on the streets of Melbourne to support the tennis player.

Many dressed in the national colours, cheering and waving Serbian flags.

One fan said he felt like he "might cry".

Another fan said she felt "amazing" upon hearing the news.

Djokovic is famously adored in his native Serbia, with fans across the world consistently turning out in loud crowds to support the national sporting hero.

Rallies have even been held in Serbia in recent days protesting his treatment in Australia.

Hundreds of Novak Djokovic's supporters gathered at a rally in downtown Belgrade on Friday to protest his confinement in Australia.

Speaking at the rally, Srdjan Djokovic described his son's struggle to play at the Australian Open as a fight against "globalists who want to ruin everything."

"He is fighting for himself, his people and all freedom-loving nations in the world," said Srdjan Djokovic, an outspoken critic of the West and supporter of Serbia's traditional Slavic ally Russia.

"They hate him because Australian politicians have put pressure on people to hate him because he thinks with his own brain."
