Toyota the top choice for Aussies in 2021

Of all the 1,049,831 new vehicles bought in Australia last year, one in five was a Toyota.

With 223,642 sales, the Japanese car giant easily ranked top of the list of new vehicle sales in Australia, according to statistics by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

Fellow Japanese manufacturer Mazda came second, with 101,119 vehicles sold, or 9.6 per cent of the market.

South Korea's Hyundai ranked third, with 72,872 vehicles sold, pipping American motoring behemoth Ford on 71,380, and South Korean automaker Kia fifth, recording 67,964 sales.

The 1,049,831 new vehicles sold across Australia last year represented a 14.5 per cent increase on 2020.

Electric vehicles sales jumped 191.1 per cent on 2020 figures.

But electric cars continue to make up a tiny fraction of the Australian automotive market, at just 0.49 per cent.

Meanwhile, Aussies continued to show their preference for SUVs and light commercial vehicles in 2021.

A total of 531,700 SUVs were sold, a 16.9 per cent increase on 2020, with light commercials up 23.2 per cent on last year's figures with a total of 253,254 vehicles sold.
