Battered tourism operators put hope in new $60m global campaign

The Federal Government will splash $60 million on a new campaign to try and woo big-spending international visitors back to Aussie tourist hotspots.

Images of Tropical North Queensland, the Gold Coast, the NSW north coast, the Sunshine Coast, Great Ocean Road, the Whitsundays and the Hunter will be the hook the global campaign hangs on.

The government will also specifically set aside $15 million for Tourism Tropical North Queensland to promote the Great Barrier Reef.

Queensland's far north was hit particularly hard during the pandemic, with an estimated 9000 workers in the region losing their jobs during the downturn.

While Australia slammed its borders shut, the tourism sector hemorrhaged an estimated $4 billion every month.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will make the tourism announcement in Cairns today, following his trip into Brisbane yesterday.

However, 9News reporter Mia Glover said not everyone was impressed with the new campaign.

"I think it is an election ploy to be quite honest," a resident from Burleigh on the Gold Coast said.

An airport worker told Glover she didn't know if $60 million was enough.
