Newcastle woman stabbed to death in alleged domestic violence crime

A woman has been stabbed to death in an alleged domestic violence-related attack in Newcastle.

NSW Police were called to a home on Crebert Street, Mayfield, about 10.40pm last night after a man allegedly broke into the unit.

Officers arrived to find a 21-year-old woman "critically injured" lying outside her home.

Paramedics and police tried to save the woman but she died at the scene.

She had suffered multiple stab wounds.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is currently in police custody.

Police established a crime scene that is being examined by specialist officers.
