Cyclist hit by huge falling tree avoids serious injury

A cyclist has escaped serious injury after being hit by huge falling tree on a road east of Melbourne.

The man in his 50s was among a group of cyclists riding on Mountain Highway between Montrose and Sassafras in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges just before 9am yesterday when he was hit by a falling gumtree.

He suffered upper body injuries and was taken to Melbourne's the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition, according to Ambulance Victoria.

The man's bike was left mangled after the incident.

The SES and The Basin Fire Brigade worked to clear the tree from the road, which had to be closed for some time.
