NSW speed camera operators banned from 'hiding' to catch out drivers

Speed camera operators in NSW are no longer allowed to position themselves behind bushes and in between cars to catch out unsuspecting motorists.

The rule change comes amid complaints speed camera operators were hiding in order to generate revenue from low-range driving offences.

Under the new rules, operators must take a photo proving a warning sign has been established before they're able to fine drivers.

However, the NSW government has warned fines will not be waived even if speed camera signs aren't visible.

Data from Revenue NSW shows the state government has received over $66 million in speeding fines this year following an increase in speed cameras.

All payments collected from fines go towards road safety and maintenance initiatives.
