Crocodile euthanised after attacking tourist and killing dog

The crocodile which attacked a tourist and killed his dog has been euthanised by authorities in Far North Queensland.

Alister MacPhee, 37, waded into the water about knee height at Bloomfield boat ramp in Ayton, north of Port Douglas, with his rottweiler at about 5.30pm yesterday.

A video shows a crocodile suddenly lunging from the water and taking a large bite out of the man's leg before seizing on the dog.

Man and dog attacked by crocodile in Bloomfield River in Far North Queensland.

Department of environment science (DES) officers from Cairns found the 4.2 metre crocodile about 200 metres from where the attack occurred, during a spotlight search last night.

"The crocodile was then humanely euthanised," DES said in a statement.

The dog was found by wildlife officers but it had not survived that attack.

Northern wildlife operations manager Michael Joyce said the department's key priority was public safety.

"The euthanasia of such a large old crocodile in its natural habitat was unfortunately unavoidable," Joyce said.

"It's important for communities in croc country to feel safe and for problem crocodiles to be dealt with appropriately.

"Remember, warning signs are not there as decoration and swimming in croc country is a choice."

DES said they would liaise with the traditional owners of the area regarding the appropriate disposal of the animal's remains.

The injured man declined to speak to the department about the incident.

The department warned others to be "crocwise" by expecting crocodiles to be in all waterways and obeying all signs when in croc country.
