Warning after man reels huge 2.5m shark at popular swimming spot

A Queensland fisherman has issued a warning to families to "watch your dogs and kids in the water" after he reeled in a huge, two metre bull shark at a popular Sunshine Coast beach.

Peter Hassett posted to Instagram showing off the "big girl" he caught - which measured in at 2.5 metres in total - while he was fishing along the Noosa River earlier in the week.

Hassett told Brisbane's 4BC that he hooked the shark on the western side of Noosa Sound, about 150 metres from the rock wall.

The waterway is a popular swimming spot among locals and tourists alike, especially for children, who are known to jump from the pier.

"We were in a plastic little boat, it was only about three metres long... we had already lost a heap of these fish to these sharks," he said.

"So we were really, really curious. A lot of them had been bitten in half.

"We thought we'd have a look to see how big these sharks were.

"Just unbelievable... it was tug-of-war."

Calm waters

Hassett said the shark was dragged to shore where they snapped a photo and unhooked the beast before letting it go.

"I would say they're in plague proportion at the moment," Hassett said.
