Police shoot man dead in Newcastle after 'officer stabbed in chest'

A man has been shot dead by police in Newcastle after allegedly stabbing an officer in the chest.

Police were called to a home in Wickham, in the harbourside city's CBD, to investigate a theft when they were "threatened" by a man armed with a knife".

"The man allegedly stabbed one constable in the chest and the second constable suffered injuries to her hands," NSW Police said in a statement.

The alleged knifeman was shot and died at the scene.

He has not been identified.

The officers have been taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A critical incident team is investigating.
