A cold front is sweeping the south-eastern corner of the country, with Melbourne expected to have its coldest May weekend in 23 years.

"A strong cold front will drag a polar air mass across south eastern Australia this weekend, causing temperature to plummet and delivering a mix of rain, hail, snow, blustery winds and thunderstorms," Weatherzone said.

Showers are likely in parts of South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

There will be the first snow of the season for some areas.
