An activist has shut down coal operations at the Port of Newcastle by attaching herself to a bridge.

The woman said police arrived to the scene about 7.45am.

The Port of Newcastle is one of the largest coal ports in the world.

It exported an estimated 136 million tonnes of coal last year.

Anti-coal activists from Blockade Australia have shut down coal export operations at the port in previous protests.

Police said an operation was underway after they were alerted about 7.15am to the incident at Wagtail Way Kooragang.

They said a small group had congregated near the bridge.
