Delays at Melbourne Airport after security breach

Security gates for some passengers at Melbourne Airport have reopened this morning after they briefly closed following a breach.

Long lines of travellers formed after security paused screening for 15 minutes.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce told Today this morning there were no significant breaches of security.

"My understanding is that there was a passenger that inadvertently went through one of the security gates, realised he did the wrong thing and then came back out again.

"So the pause happened just to make sure that the passenger didn't breach that security. So people were looking at CCTV cameras, checking that everything was okay, then decided everything was okay and check-in and boarding and security through the gates resumed."

"While it was a technical breach, there wasn't any significant breach of security at the airport."

The gates have now reopened and security staff are working through the backlog.
