Rolled truck spills 'toxic' glue across Auckland road

A truck has rolled in Wiri, south Auckland, spilling carpet glue all over the road and causing a build-up of morning traffic.

A container truck carrying 22 tonnes of carpet glue, crashed and rolled onto its side shortly before 8am local time (6am AEST), spilling the substance all over the road, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) told Stuff.

"The brigade is attempting to block drains and redirect the leak to a place of safety," a Fenz spokesperson said.

A Stuff reporter at the scene said the road was partially blocked by fire trucks, and there were at least a dozen people on the scene, including road workers and police.

The reporter said carpet glue could be seen dripping out of the container and onto the road, and was a mixture of white and clear-coloured.

Fire and Emergency confirmed the spill had caused heavy traffic in the area, but there were no injuries.

Fenz are seeking more information about the substance that came from the truck, and are waiting on an environmental representative from council is assist with the cleanup.

A woman in the carpet industry said that carpet glue is a toxic substance, although it is safe with adequate ventilation.

Waka Kotahi told commuters in the area to "expect delays".

"Due to a crash the southbound on-ramp from Canvendish Drive to State Highway 20 is closed, as it the left southbound lane on Cavendish Drive under the SH20 bridge," Waka Kotahi said in a tweet.

"Expect delays for all traffic through this area until cleared."

Police also attended the incident, and said while there were no reported injuries, the truck was leaking a "large substance" and the westbound lanes were closed while Fenz cleaned up the spillage.

"Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible," a police spokesperson said.

Emergency services were still working to contain the spill at 10am.
