Military helicopter crash believed to have killed four in Queensland

A military helicopter crash is believed to have killed four people in Queensland.

Reports suggest the aircraft was involved in exercises between the Australian and US military when it crashed off Hamilton Island in The Whitsundays about 11pm.

At this stage it is not clear if the helicopter was Australian or American but it has occurred during Exercise Talisman Sabre.

Four feared dead in military helicopter crash during Exercise Talisman Sabre off Hamilton Island.

Recovery efforts are underway.

Talisman Sabre is a bilateral joint military exercise between Australia and the United States but it has expanded to 13 nations this year.

It began in 2005 and is the biggest it's been this year, involving 30,000 military personnel.

"It's going to be the most significant logistics exercise that we will see between Australia and the United States in Australia since the Second World War," deputy prime minister Richard Marles said last week.
