Woman pulled from river, arrested after early morning police chase

A woman has been pulled from a river and arrested after a police chase in Melbourne overnight ended in the water.

The 48-year-old woman allegedly pushed a silver Nissan X-Trail into the Maribyrnong River in Footscray then entered the water herself while being chased by the police helicopter and patrol cars.

The pursuit began when police tried to pull the Footscray woman over on Joseph Road in Footscray about 1am and she allegedly refused to stop.

Police on the ground and a police helicopter then chased her to Dynon Road near the Maribyrnong River.

Officers had to climb into the water to get the woman, who was taken to hospital for pre-existing injuries.

The Nissan moved a short way down the river before it stopped against the Hopkins Street Bridge.

It is yet to be pulled from the river.
