Powerball jackpot hits $100 million tonight

The fact that they are 11,000 times more likely to be struck by lightning won't stop millions of Australians who hope to win the year's equal-biggest Powerball jackpot tonight.

The pot has hit $100 million after the previous five Powerball draws delivered no division one winners.

The Lott expects that "up to half" of the adults in the country would pick up a ticket before purchases close at 7.30pm AEST.

"The last time we had a $100 million Powerball draw was only six weeks ago when a Bankstown dad pocketed the entire jackpot prize and became Australia's second-biggest individual lottery winner," The Lott spokesperson Anna Hobdell said.

"On that occasion, the peak of sales was at 6.29pm on the day of the draw when more than 8227 tickets were sold in a single minute."

The Lott website estimates the odds of winning Powerball division one, based on one standard game, at one in 134,490,400.

That compares to the estimated odds of being struck by lightning in Australia at a comparatively commonplace one in 12,000.

People who do punt on a ticket are advised to register any entries to a player card or online account so they can be contacted after the draw if they win a piece of the pie.

Depending on where they live in Australia, winners have between 12 months and seven years to claim their prize.
