Girl critical, 14 stable after two killed in five car crash

A nine-year-old girl is in a critical but stable condition, while 14 others are in stable conditions, after a horror crash that killed two men in the NSW Central Tablelands.

More than 80 emergency services professionals were called to the Great Western Highway at Wallerawang, about 15 kilometres north of Lithgow, after five cars collided just before 1pm yesterday.

"An eastbound Isuzu D-max, towing a motorcycle trailer, and a westbound Toyota Hilux collided before the Toyota struck a Hyundai Tucson causing it to leave the roadway, trapping the occupants while the Isuzu struck a Kia Carnival head on," NSW Police said a statement.

"A Nissan Patrol – towing a caravan and travelling behind the Isuzu - struck the trailer."

Police said the 42-year-old Isuzu driver and 49-year-old Kia driver became trapped and died at the scene.

"The six passengers of (the) Kia, a 41-year-old woman and five children, aged between five and 15, suffered varying injuries," officers said.

"They were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead and Westmead Children's Hospital."

9News understands the nine-year-old suffered critical head and chest injuries.

"One child remains in a critical but stable condition, the four others are stable while the woman has since been released.

"The Hyundai driver, a 55-year-old man, suffered multiple fractures and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, while his two passengers were also taken to hospital for treatment.

"They all remain in stable conditions."

Emergency services also assessed four people in a Toyota and Nissan and the two drivers of those cars were taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

The Great Western Highway has reopened.

More than 80 emergency service personnel responded to the crash.

Investigations are ongoing.
