British base jumper dies in Thailand after leap off apartment block

A 33-year-old British base jumper has reportedly died after jumping off the roof of a 29-storey apartment block in Pattaya, Thailand.

Witnesses alerted authorities on Saturday evening after the man's parachute failed to open, the BBC reports.

The man was seen crashing through a tree and falling to the ground in the eastern beach resort town.

The parachutist jumped off toe roof of an apartment building in Pattaya City.

The man, who has not been named, appeared to be an experienced parachutist with many of his jumps well documented on social media, the BBC reports.

Base jumping, which involves jumping from high landmarks instead of from a plane, can be extremely dangerous as it leaves jumpers with just seconds to open their parachute before hitting the ground.

A British Foreign Office spokesperson said it was supporting the family of a British man who died in Thailand.
