Man allegedly shot dead after stand-off with police in northern Queensland

A man has allegedly been shot dead by police in northern Queensland overnight after a stand-off.

9News understands police were called to a house on Payne Street, Mount Louisa, a suburb of Townsville, for a mental health check just after midnight.

It's believed a man in his 20s threatened police with a weapon before police open-fired.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives have this morning established a crime scene and there is a heavy police presence on scene.

It's the second fatal shooting that's unfolded in the state in the past 24 hours after a woman was allegedly shot by an 18-year-old man north of Brisbane.
