A Queensland snake catcher has warned pet bird owners to double-check what cages they're keeping their feathered friends in after a tragedy befell a couple of budgies on the Sunshine Coast.
Snake Catcher Dan posted on Facebook about the incident, which took place in Pelican Waters.
"Lots of people make the mistake of thinking these straight bar bird cages are snake proof," he wrote.

"Unfortunately this customer had to find out the hard way when she lost two of her budgies to a hungry coastal carpet python."
Dan wrote that snakes were able to squeeze through gaps "roughly one-third the width of their body".
"So you've really got to use that 1cm x 1cm mesh if you want to keep pythons out," he said.
