'Blind and deaf' man dies after inferno engulfs Brisbane unit block

A man is dead and a woman rushed to hospital after an intense fire at a unit complex in Brisbane's north-east yesterday.

Fire crews were called to Amelia Street in Albion at about 4.30pm yesterday after reports that a two-storey unit block was engulfed in flames.

Neighbours who were on the scene first found a woman who had escaped the building calling for help.

She had burns to her face, hands and feet, and said she had been asleep when the fire took hold and awoke to flames surrounding her.

The woman, 33, suffered burns to 40 per cent of her body, and is now in hospital.

Another man in the building, who has not yet identified, died.

"The lady from the house came running out and sort of laid down on the road and, one of the other neighbours started to help her, and we jumped out and got a blanket, wet it and tried to help her and calm her down a bit," one neighbour said.

"She was screaming and she said that it was an older man in there, blind and deaf, apparently, who she was very concerned about, but there was flames coming out of the house, so we couldn't get anywhere near it."

Much of the property was destroyed in the inferno, which fire crews described as very intense.

Police are now investigating the blaze.
