A preliminary toxicology analysis of Liam Payne's body has shown the former One Direction singer had multiple drugs in his system at the time of his death, local media is reporting.

The 31-year-old died last week after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Prosecutors believe the British singer was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.Buenos Aires Times.

Initial test results have been sent to the prosecutor leading the case into Payne's death.

The results of the toxicology tests are preliminary and a full analysis is still pending.

Preliminary results from Payne's autopsy released on Monday showed he had an amount of cocaine in the body, reports the Noticias Argentinas news agency.

The US-based ABC News reports the drugs included pink cocaine, which is typically a mixture of substances such as methamphetamine, ketamine and MDMA.

Authorities think he may have fallen from the balcony in a state of "semi or total unconsciousness".

Tests on a white powder discovered in his hotel room were undetermined and the substance will undergo further testing, the Infobae website reports.

Authorities are investigating who provided Payne with the drugs he used at the hotel in the Argentine capital. Police have questioned three hotel employees, including a cleaner.

Autopsy results released last Friday said the singer's death was likely caused by a mental health "episode" linked to drug use.

"It is presumed that Payne did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and may have collapsed in a state of semi- or total unconsciousness," the report said.

Prosecutor Marelo Roma has said that Payne was alone when the fall happened and has ruled out foul play.

Payne's father arrived in Buenos Aires last Friday to arrange for the return of his son's body to England.
