What the weather will be like for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day celebrations

Bring the sunscreen when you set up camp for today's New Year's Eve festivities - it's going to be a hot one around the country.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said today was likely to be warm and mostly dry with patches of storms in the tropics and along the east coast.

Tomorrow, temperatures are likely to cool and the rain to spread a little more.

Here's how things stand around the country.

New South Wales

Bradbury said temperatures on the east coast would range from the mid to low 30s, rising to the high 30s further inland today.

There's a risk of storms in the state's north-east, with heavy rain, damaging winds, and hail possible.

Conditions for Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations are expected to be warm and humid, with a possible shower or two, but that should ease toward midnight, Bradbury said.

Temperatures in the city at midnight are expected to be in the low 20s.

New Year's Day will be mild to warm around the state, with showers and storms continuing in the east.

Victoria

Temperatures today will be in the mid to high 20s in Melbourne and hotter and clearer inland, with a slight chance of patchy showers in East Gippsland that will clear by evening, Bradbury said.

Melbourne this evening is expected to be cool and mostly clear.

Temperatures at midnight in the city will be in the high teens.

New Year's Day will be a bit cooler, though warmer and drier inland.

Queensland

It's going to be stormy today in Queensland's south-east, but Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast should be spared the worst of it, Bradbury said.

Storms and thunderstorms are forecast for the Scenic Rim, Darling Downs, Wide Bay and Burnett regions.

Western Queensland is expected reach past 40 degrees in some areas.

For this evening's celebrations, Brisbane is expected to be mild and humid, with a possible shower and partly cloudy skies.

Temperatures at midnight will be in the low 20s.

On New Year's Day, showers and thunderstorms are expected to be more extensive in the southern and central regions, extending to the tropical north up the east coast.

South Australia

It's going to be hot and dry across the state today, Bradbury said, with clear skies.

Temperatures will range from the high 20s to the low 30s along the cost, and from the mid 30s to low 40s inland.

Adelaide this evening will be clear and warm, with light winds.

New Year's Day will see cooler temperatures in the south, and the slight chance of rain in the far south-east.

Western Australia

The south of the state will be "warm and settled", Bradbury said, with temperatures in the low to mid 20s along the south coast, and the mid to high 30s elsewhere in the south.

The rest of the state will face hotter temperatures into the low 40s, including heatwave conditions in parts.

Dry thunderstorms are possible in the north and on the upper coast.

Perth will be "clear and hot" for its celebrations, which will continue into New Year's Day.

January 1 will also see the risk of dry thunderstorms potentially extend to Perth.

Australian Capital Territory

Canberra will be warm and cloudy with a slight chance of a shower and temperatures from the high 20s to the low 30s.

Bradbury said the risk of rain would ease during the evening, with midnight temperature forecast in the high teens.

New Year's Day will see partly cloudy skies and mild to warm conditions, with a slight chance of a shower.

Tasmania

Conditions today are expected to be mild with some cloud, in the high teens to low 20s.

For the celebrations in Hobart there may be a slight chance of a shower, with temperatures in the mid teens at midnight.

New Year's Day is expected to be cool to mild, with scattered showers.

Northern Territory

Today is set to be hot, with low to severe heatwaves across the north and centre of the NT.

Showers and storms are possible in the Top End.

Temperatures in the mid to high 30s in the north and the high 30s to low 40s in the south are forecast.

Darwin's revellers may have to contend with rain but conditions are expected to ease during the evening.

By midnight Darwin's likely to be humid, with temperatures in the high 20s.

January 1 is set to be hot again, and dry and sunny inland, with storms continuing in the north.
