AFL legend Anthony Koutoufides to run as federal election candidate

Former Carlton player Anthony Koutoufides is expected to formally launch his candidacy in the coming federal election this weekend.

It comes just three months after the AFL legend fell short in his bid to become Lord Mayor of Melbourne.

Koutoufides, who played 300 games for Carlton from 1992 to 2007, will run as an independent in the federal seat of Melbourne, according to The Age.

The seat has been held by Greens leader Adam Bandt since 2010 and has a current margin of 10.2 per cent.

"I believe I can (win) otherwise I wouldn't run," Koutoufides told The Age.

"I know there's going to be doubters out there, but I love that."

While Koutoufides has not disclosed many policies he plans to support, he previously backed several initiatives during his Lord Mayor bid, including a proposal to subsidise city cafes to offer free coffees and a plan to reduce public transport costs on Fridays.

The date of the federal election has not yet been announced but must be held by May 17.
