Sledgehammer used as group tries to break into occupied Melbourne home

A group has used a sledgehammer to try to break into a Melbourne apartment in the middle of the night while the residents were inside.

One resident physically pushed one of the offenders away as they tried to climb in a broken window at the Collingwood apartment about 3.15am on November 20.

A total of five offenders allegedly set upon the Harmsworth Street apartment with the sledgehammer.

The residents called police and the group quickly fled the scene.

Officers heading to the flat noticed a stolen grey Volkswagen Amarok with registration plates 1HL-1TG leaving the area.

Detectives believe the people who were in the Amarok, which was stolen from Newport on November 18, may be able to assist with their investigation into the aggravated home invasion.
