Teen's quick thinking leads to rescue of missing kayakers

A 13-year-old boy's quick thinking helped police find and rescue two missing kayakers in Victoria.

The teen and a 51-year-old woman were reported missing at Drik Drik in the state's south-west yesterday.

They had gone out kayaking but failed to return to their rendezvous point near the Keegans Bend Track by 8pm.

Police carried out a ground and air search, with the Air Wing spotting the missing pair after the boy used the light on his watch to signal the helicopter.

The pair were found on the bank of the Glenelg River, near Laceys Lane, just after midnight and airlifted to safety.

Neither were injured.

"The quick-thinking actions of the 13-year-old boy, who shined his watch light at police, ultimately led to their rescue," Air Wing Inspector Kelly Walker said.

"Our night-vision picks up heat, so the pair were not standing out against the large number of wildlife that come out to play at night.

"However, his decision to shine a light appeared as a beacon which led crews to their exact location."

Inspector Walker said it was a timely reminder to people to carry the right equipment when out for a paddle.

"Carrying a form of communication and a lifejacket could save your life," she said.
