Australia Post is considering the viability of keeping the doors open of up to 30 metropolitan post offices as customers take to the service's online offerings in droves, 9News.com.au understands.
The national service is currently conducting a review of more than 4000 post offices across Australia, finding that since COVID-19 many city-based offices have experienced a "significant decline" in customer visits.
None of the post offices earmarked for potential closure are in rural and remote locations.

In a statement a spokesperson for Australia Post said no final decision has been made on site closures, and that reviews of post office locations were an ongoing process.
"We are continually reviewing the number and location of Post Offices to match consumer demand or manage property-related issues," the spokesperson said.
"While no final decisions have been made, there are a small number of primarily metropolitan Post Offices, with very low and declining foot traffic, expiring leases or building damage that are currently under review and all team members will be redeployed to nearby Corporate Post Offices.
"Australia Post is committed to ensuring it meets changing community needs and creates a sustainable network that allows the business to continue to invest and deliver for all Australians."

If 30 post offices were to close it would represent less than one per cent of Australia Post offices in the country closing.
The spokesperson said a result of COVID-19 was that many customers are now more familiar with Australia Post's digital and non-contact services such as parcel lockers.
"Australia Post is committed to providing a sustainable postal service for all Australians, to ensure Post Offices can continue to connect communities and support small businesses for decades to come," the spokesperson said.
"Australia Post currently operates or licenses more than 4000 Post Offices around Australia, which is a bigger store network than the major supermarkets.
"The pandemic and the rapid growth in the use of online services has resulted in a significant decline in customer visits to most Post Offices."
