Rain to soak all states and territories this week

Rain will fall in large areas in every state and territory this week, while some areas will also be hit with thunderstorms and flooding, meteorologists have warned.

The rain will be caused by two northwest cloud bands moving across Australia throughout the week, Weatherzone has explained.

"Northwest cloud bands are large bands of cloud that spread across Australia from the northwest towards the southeast," meteorologist Ben Domensino said.

"They are caused by moisture-laden air from the tropical Indian Ocean and typically produce widespread rain over Australia between autumn and spring."

It is expected to be wet across most states across the country on Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting there will be rain today in all capital cities except for Brisbane, Darwin and Perth.

There are currently flood warnings in place for parts of Queensland.
