Sydney store owner says power bills doubled in a year

A Sydney store owner has aired his shock after his electricity bill more than doubled in a year.

Hazem Sedda, whose family-owned Redfern Convenience Store enjoys a popular following online, said comparing bills from August 2022 and August 2023 showed a "significant surge".

"During the same period last year, in August 2022, the electricity bill for the convenience store amounted to a reasonable $4306.39," he said on Instagram.

The owner of Redfern Convenience Store claimed his power bills had more than doubled in a year.

"However, the bill for this year's August has dealt a staggering blow, reaching an astounding $10,369.79."

He posted an image showing the two bills side by side.

"This drastic spike in costs is particularly concerning, especially considering the current winter season and the store's deliberate avoidance of power-intensive appliances such as air-conditioning units," Sedda wrote.

Electricity prices have been spiking as wholesale values increase, leading to heavier bills around the country.

And Australians have been warned it's likely to get worse after the national energy regulator revised upwards its estimates for early next year.

A hotter, drier summer and looming potential El Nino is also expected to put pressure on electricity prices.
