School children rescued from burning boat in Melbourne

More than a dozen school children have been rescued from a ferry after it caught fire in Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay this morning.

Police responded to reports the ferry caught fire in waters off Queenscliff about 8.30am.

The 22 passengers, which included school students and staff were safely evacuated onto the second ferry.

Police believe that the engine bay may have caught fire, but said no one was injured.

The fire was extinguished, and police will tow the ferry to shore.

The exact circumstances surrounding the fire are yet to determined but the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

Dianne told 3AW's Tom Elliott earlier that the ferry she was onboard was forced to detour after receiving reports of the burning boat.
