Sydney lockdown

What does the lockdown mean?

The lockdown means there are only four reasons to leave your home, including: shopping for food or other essential goods and services; medical care or compassionate needs including getting vaccinated; exercise outdoors and essential work or education, where you cannot work or study at home.

There is no curfew.

"You need to stay at home unless absolutely necessary," Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

"The necessary reasons include - if you can't work from home and you have to work outside of home.

"If you can't get educated at home and you have to get educated outside of home.

"If you exercise outside, although we don't want any more groups than ten.

"And if you need to provide care or compassion to a relative. And fourthly, of course, if you need to buy essential goods or services."

Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said people can also go have their coronavirus vaccination.

"You can access healthcare as required and can I stress - clearly, there is no barrier for you to go and get a vaccination and seek medical care," she said.

"Please, get vaccinated."

Who does the lockdown apply to?

The restrictions apply to anyone who lives or works in the four council areas of City of Sydney, Waverley, Randwick and Woollahra.

"For example, I don't live in those areas but I work there and have done so in the last fortnight, so therefore, I'm captured by that stay-at-home order," Ms Berejiklian explained.

"So if you live or work in those four Local Government Areas, you need to make sure that you don't leave your home unless for the main reasons."

The Hunter New England Local Health District has ordered that people who do not live in Greater Sydney, but who have visited there in the past 14 days, must wear a facemask in the community when they return, until at least July 2.

The public health order does not apply to a person aged 12 years or under, or a person with a physical or mental health illness or condition, or disability, that makes wearing a fitted face covering unsuitable including, for example, a skin condition, an intellectual disability, autism or trauma.

Can I visit family/friends?

No, you won't be able to have visitors to your home or have gatherings during the lockdown.

If I am locked down, is my whole household also?

No, if you have worked regularly in one of the four LGAs but you live outside of them, only you are subject to the stay-at-home order.

This means your family, housemates, or partner can move freely, adhering to any other public health orders in place in your location.

Is retail still open?

Only "essential" retail stores and supermarkets are still open, but you should only shop for essential food and supplies when you need them.

"You can go out and buy anything you need any time of the day," Ms Berejiklian said.

Can I still have a wedding or funeral?

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said on Twitter this afternoon that weddings and funerals can still go ahead. More information on this is expected to follow.

What are the travel restrictions?

There is no travel radius like in Melbourne's lockdown, meaning there is no limit on how far you can travel for essential reasons.

However, people in metropolitan Sydney are not permitted to travel to regional areas unless they absolutely need to.

If you are in one of the four LGAs in lockdown, you must not travel to regional NSW unless it's for one of the permitted reasons to leave home.

Are cafes and restaurants still open?

Businesses in the affected LGAs must only provide essential food and services. For example, takeaway food or grocery services.

"If you are a business in those four Local Government Areas, unfortunately, unless you're providing essential food and services - that is take away food and services or grocery services of that nature, we don't expect those businesses to remain open in the next week," Ms Berejiklian said.

Can I go to work or school?

People need to work and study from home where possible, but you are permitted to leave home for work and school purposes if you must.
