Teen charged over deaths of two girls killed in car crash in ACT

A teen has been charged over the deaths of two teenage girls yesterday after a horror car crash at Hume in the ACT.

Police responded to the crash on the Monaro Highway just after 8am on Sunday and found two girls - aged 14 and 15 - dead inside the car.

Officers say at least two other occupants of the vehicle were present during the crash, but had fled the scene.

Police suspect the bodies of the girls were left at the crash site "hours before emergency services were notified by a passer-by".

The two other teens involved, both known to the girls, were later tracked down at homes on Sunday and this morning a 16-year-old boy was charged.

He is charged with two counts of culpable driving causing death, breach of bail, breach of good behaviour order, driving as an unaccompanied learner, and failing to stop and render assistance.

The boy will face the ACT Children's Court today.

Police say they are working to determine the cause of the crash, which saw a Toyota veer off the road, plough through a row of fences and then smash into a tree.

Anyone who witnessed the event or might have dashcam footage are urged to contact police.

The death toll on ACT roads in 2022 currently stands at 14.
